This painting was inspired by a film clip shown in a documentary about Jennifer Lopez. In the clip, Mexicans entering the US illegally were separated from their children, by the US authorities, and the children were put into cages. It was a horrific and shameful image and, for me, it also highlights the question of even when you are legally settled in your new home country, do you ever escape the cage of being a migrant.
